
Why your bathroom mirror stays warm (and fog-free)
Ever step into a freezing bathroom in the morning and dread the wait for the room to warm up? We’ve all been there. That’s why we use short-wave infrared (IR) emitters. Here’s the secret: most heaters try to warm up the air around you. That takes forever. But IR radiation is different. It shoots energy directly onto the glass and your skin. You feel the heat in seconds. No waiting. No shivering. Getting the heat just right To get that luxury, “five-star hotel” feel without taking up half the wall, we go for high power density. We use a quartz halogen tube to focus all that energy into a tight beam. The physics are actually pretty straightforward. The filament hits its peak temperature almost instantly. It sends out waves that punch right through the glass to heat the reflective backing. This does two things: it kills the fog before it even starts, and it gives you that immediate glow of warmth while you’re getting ready. The nuts and bolts We don’t cut corners on materials. We use high-purity quartz glass because it can handle the “thermal shock”—basically, going from ice-cold to scorching hot in a heartbeat—without cracking. For the electrical side, we stick with spring-loaded connectors (like the R7s). They keep a tight grip on everything, so you don’t have to worry about sparks or loose connections as the metal expands and contracts. And since nobody wants to be blinded by a bright light while shaving, we add a special coating to the tube. It cuts down the glare but keeps all the heat. The tricky part When you’re packing this much heat into a slim mirror frame, you have to be careful. These tubes get hot. If you just throw them in a plastic box, things will melt. Simple as that. That’s why we use heat-resistant alloys or ceramics for the chassis. We also make sure there’s plenty of breathing room for the air to move. Just to be safe, we always add a thermal fuse. If the airflow gets blocked for some reason, the fuse trips and shuts everything down before anything burns out. Better safe than sorry.
