
Why Your Bathroom Heater Doesn’t Just Shatter
Let’s talk about bathroom heaters. They live in a brutal environment. One minute it’s freezing and damp, and the next, you’ve got a lamp blasting heat in a room full of steam. We use infrared lamps because they’re fast. They don’t waste time trying to heat up all the air in the room; they just beam the heat straight at you. It’s that instant warmth that makes a cold morning bearable. But there’s a problem: standard glass hates water. Imagine a lamp glowing at 800°C. Now imagine a single, cold drop of water hitting that surface. The glass shrinks instantly in that one spot, creates a massive amount of tension, and—pop—you’ve got glass shards all over your floor. That’s why we use “explosion-proof” quartz. It’s not about resisting a bomb; it’s just treated glass that can handle those wild temperature swings without freaking out. It stays together, even when the conditions get messy. Inside the tube, there’s a high-wattage tungsten filament. The quartz does two jobs here: it keeps oxygen from eating the filament and lets that short-wave heat pass right through to your skin. We make the walls of these tubes a bit thicker to make sure they’re tough enough to last, but not so thick that they block the heat. One quick tip: check your housing. If your reflector is crooked or if something is blocking the airflow, the heat builds up in the wrong places. That’s a fast track to burning out your bulbs. Now, a word on the electrical side. Since these pull a lot of power the second you flip the switch, you really need a dedicated GFCI breaker. It’s just safer. Make sure your wiring is thick enough, too, or you’ll notice the heat isn’t hitting quite as hard. And here is something most people miss:check your sockets. Every few months, just make sure the lamp is seated tight. If the connection is loose, it starts to arc. That creates a different kind of heat—the kind that melts your plastic housing long before the bulb actually dies. Keep it tight, keep it clean, and you’re good to go.
