Keeping Your Infrared Heaters Safe in the Steam
Putting infrared lamps in a bathroom or a steam room is basically like inviting a fight with moisture. Between the humidity and the constant condensation, you’re dealing with a recipe for short circuits if you aren’t careful. That’s why we stick to the IP55 standard. It’s not just about slapping on a plastic guard; it’s about making sure the electricity stays exactly where it belongs, even when the air is thick with steam. The battle against the damp An IP55 rating basically means the unit can handle dust and low-pressure water jets coming from any angle. We make this happen with heavy-duty sealed gaskets and cabling that doesn’t care about moisture. Here’s the thing: steam is sneaky. It finds the tiniest gaps. If those droplets hit the live terminals of a halogen or quartz lamp, you’ve got a ground fault on your hands. To stop that, we use potting compounds and sealed connectors. It keeps the electrical path totally isolated from the outer chassis. Heat, expansion, and the “stretch” Infrared lamps get incredibly hot. The quartz tube expands when you turn it on and shrinks when it cools down. Most rubber seals just can’t take that kind of stress—they’ll crack or warp over time. We use high-temperature silicone and specialized ceramics instead. They can handle the heat without losing their shape, which means your waterproof seal actually stays waterproof. The trade-off you need to know about There is a catch, though. When you seal something this tight to keep water out, you’re also trapping heat inside. Because the air can’t flow as freely as it would in an open-frame heater, the internal temperature climbs fast. You have to be smart about your thermal cut-off switches. If you over-insulate without thinking about how that heat escapes, you’ll burn out your filaments way sooner than you should. One last tip? Wire everything through a dedicated GFCI. The IP55 housing does the heavy lifting with the water, but the GFCI is there for those “just in case” moments. It’s the best way to sleep easy.
