
Keeping Things Warm (And Your Eyes Happy) with IP66 Heaters
Building a heater for a wet environment isn’t as simple as just slapping a waterproof seal on it. When we’re putting together IP66-rated heaters for bathrooms or outdoor spots, we run into a bit of a problem. You want that instant, cozy warmth, but you don’t want to blind the person standing under it—especially if it’s a baby with sensitive eyes. The glare problem Standard short-wave lamps are bright. Like, really bright. It’s that harsh, blinding light that makes you squint. To fix that, we use special quartz coatings and filtered halogen filaments. Basically, we tweak the light spectrum to kill off those aggressive blue and white frequencies. Instead of a spotlight, you get a soft, warm glow. You still get all the heat on your skin, but your retinas aren’t taking a beating. Dealing with the seal Now, that IP66 rating is great because it means the unit is dust-tight and can handle a high-pressure blast of water. We make that happen with tempered glass and high-temp silicone gaskets. But here’s the catch: when you seal a box that tight to keep water out, the air can’t move. The electronics inside can get hot fast. Just make sure whatever surface you’re mounting it to allows for some natural airflow. Otherwise, the internal thermal fuse might trip, and your heater will just shut down. A few tips for setup We usually wire these directly into the mains. Because the heat is so concentrated at the filament, the unit stays small and out of the way. If you’re putting these in a commercial bathroom, just double-check your circuit load first. Also, keep in mind that the eye-safe coating changes the heat pattern slightly compared to a bare quartz tube. You might need to move the heater up or down a few inches to get the temperature feeling just right.
