Getting the Heat Right
Annealing wine glasses is a balancing act. You need to heat up quickly, but you have to hold that temperature steady. We build our tubes based on the exact voltage and wattage you’re already using. If you need more heat in a smaller space, we can bump up the wattage to increase the heat density. That means you can push more glass through the line. Just a heads-up: make sure your wiring and power supply can handle the extra draw. You don’t want to be dealing with blown fuses or melted connectors in the middle of a peak cycle.
The Gear Under the Hood
We use high-purity quartz glass. Why? Because lehrs are brutal on equipment, and these tubes can handle the thermal shock without giving up. Depending on what kind of glass you’re running, you can go with clear tubes or coated ones. The coated versions shift the emission spectrum, which helps the heat actually soak into the glass wall rather than just bouncing off the surface. As for the fit, we stick to standard R7s or SK15 bases. You won’t have to rewire your sockets or “hack” anything to make them fit. We build these to tight tolerances, so they slide right into the reflectors. No rattling, no gaps, and no annoying cold spots.
Real-World Use (and a few tips)
These lamps react way faster than old-school resistive elements. It gives you a much tighter grip on your annealing curve, which means better quality glass. But here is the thing: high-intensity shortwave lamps put a lot of stress on the quartz. If you want them to last, keep an eye on your reflectors. Give them a good cleaning every quarter. When dust builds up, the lamps have to run hotter than they should just to hit your set point, and that’s a fast track to a burnout. Keep them clean, and they’ll keep humming along.
